Today I am going to introduce you to the IDEA of your Breath. Let me give you a little exercise. You can read it and do it, or you can listen on the Meditation site when I guide you through it.
So how was that? How much were you in the now? The first time I did this exercise I was in tears. Because the tension in my body was slowly melted away which left me in my own pain and emptiness. I was also recognizing that my time to be in the now was almost equal with nothing. But with the time and practice it’s change. I promise. It takes some tears (sometimes even today) but this is a way to your body to relax, renew and clean itself.
When we working with our breath, in Yoga, it is called Pranayama, which literally means extension of the prana. Prana is your life force. It is not just oxygen but also an electro magnetic field, an energy, which you also need to your own body as well. (It is science, FYI)
Without your breath you are not existing. That is the only thing in your life that is sure. That is the first thing you take when you born and that is the last thing that leave you before you die – as my teacher Mona Anand told one day during class. You can live without fame, money and fancy stuff but you cannot live without your breath. So it is both important and scary, if you ask me… Just think about that for a moment! And THAT, you can not do fancy Instagram pictures about, but IT IS, however, one of the most important part of YOGA.
B.K.S. Iyengar call Pranayama in his book Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali “the exalted knowledge, a royal road to well-being, freedom and bliss.“ If you can master your breath, you can also master your mind and your concentration which is an important part to our next topic, Pratiyahara, withdrawal on your senses. But I am going to talk about in an other day.
So what I do every time before meditation is controlling my breath on different way so I can take my senses inside and cut the rest of the world outside. It is a tons of way you can do it. That you did here with me, called the Full Complete Breath is one way. I mean how many time do we take a full complete breath during the day? In a store? In our jobs? When you try to explain to your child that it is not ok to throw sand on his sister on the beach? When the car drivers around you send you to different places because he thinks that you are too slow? ZERO. Your breath is short, fast and it goes to your chest. And then you start to get anxiety, dizziness and in a long term high blood pressure and other health issues.
So If you want to work with your breath you can start to use this exercise I just give you. Do it every day. Like 5 minutes before you go up in the morning and 5 minutes before you go to bed. And if you want more in your practice, look at your breath next time you do your yoga practice and be an observer of your own mind and breath. I promise, it going to be interesting!!!! Not do anything else, not judge yourself, just watch where your mind is going and how it is effect your breath!!!! Just recognize it and gently lead it back to the now. Good luck, and if you have question please write to me!
See you next time with some more!!
